The motivation of the development of the service can be boiled down to three things:

1. The core concept motivating the development of FindStocksForMe is the concept of ‘Wisdom of the Crowds’ (WotC). WotC is the idea that large groups of people are collectively smarter than individual experts when it comes to problem solving. The concept has been researched and experimented in many fields, including but not limited to:
   • Predicting sports outcomes (Herzog and Hertwig 2011; Goel et al. 2010)
   • Predicting climate related, social, and technological events (Hueffer et al. 2013; Kaplan, Skogstad, and Girshick 1950)
   • Answering General Knowledge Questions (Surowiecki 2005)
   • Forecasting current political and economic events (Budescu and Chen 2014; Griffiths and Tenenbaum 2006; Hill and Ready-Campbell 2011)
   One outcome of these studies is that when aggregated to the domain-level (a comprehensive understanding of the broad level of a specific field of expertise), the crowd “consistently outperforms individuals, often by a large margin” (Camelia Simoiu et al. 2019).
2. There are very few fields more unpredictable and complicated than the stock market. Investment groups rely on heavy computation and even strategies such as satellite images of parking lots to gain a competitive edge in predicting market trends! Regardless, stock market trends cannot be perfectly predicted algorithmically. According to statistical analysis of the stock market, the movement more closely resembles ‘Brownian Motion’ and ‘Random Walks’ than a systematic geometric/algorithmic equation. In a deterministic viewpoint of the world, it is theoretically possible to map the movement of the market through past events. However, realistically this solution is lost almost instantaneously through the chaos of the variables associated with predicting the market movement.
3. Most people want to learn how to invest in the stock market but people face restrictions in knowledge, time, community, and/or capital; it can be intimidating and scary for people without the proper education and experience. Many do not know where to start and are afraid that their lack of knowledge and experience can lead to the loss of financial security quickly. Additionally, most people are fearful that they need to risk their money to gain knowledge and experience with investing in stocks/securities.

We wanted to create a platform that combines the three motivations above. We want to see how effective the WotC is for predicting the stock market, especially when combined with advanced models for predicting trends. We wanted to create a platform that allows users to practice investing and build their intuition in a risk-free manner. We gamify this practice through leaderboards and weekly challenges. We help individuals filter through the thousands of investment options to just a handful. We nurture the sense of community, sharing of ideas, and making connections. We hope everyone who uses the platform gains confidence and intuition, and maybe transfer what they learn from the platform to real-life trading in the future!
